In 2010 a local group compared the county against four other “peer” cities: Austin, Texas, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Huntsville, Alabama, and Raleigh, North Carolina. It evaluated nine areas: business dynamism/vitality, competitiveness, education, economic growth, economic prosperity, livability, productivity/labor supply, technology and innovation/work force. While the county does well against national figures, and scored high in livability, it usually ranked last against these “peers” in the other eight areas.[89]
According to the 2000 census, the county had about 80,000 veterans. 21% of the population older than 18 is a veteran.[75] This had dropped to 74,000 in 2010. This was 21% of the people in the county.[76] An actual count by a local agency in 2010 indicated that 225 of veterans were homeless.[77] In 2007, a local census by volunteers counted 1,899 homeless residents.[78]
As of 2010, 90.20% of all residents spoke English as their first language, while 5.29% spoke Spanish, 0.62% German, 0.61% French, and 0.47% French Creole (mostly Haitian Creole) as their mother language.[93] In total, 9.80% of the population spoke languages other than English as their primary language.[93]
In 2018, an official observed another possible housing bubble in the making. There were 250,000 housing units for a population of 580,000, ample for their needs. The population is not growing rapidly, new housing is being constructed. Nevertheless, prices are surging.[154]
Tornado-like eddies spinning off from even small storms can result in severe damage in small areas.[27] Generally, summertime tornadoes are brief, are at the EF0 or EF1 level, and may not actually touch down. During the dry season, they can attain a force of EF2 and touch the ground for miles.[28] While tornadoes in the Midwest are more severe, a higher rate of deaths are experienced in Florida, and Brevard County, specifically, due to higher population density and quantity of manufactured homes.[29]
In 2007, Space Coast Credit Union was the largest locally based financial institution in Brevard County and the third largest credit union in the state of Florida, with assets of over $3 billion.[217][218]
“We found Carol and Robert through their blog, and could not be more happy that we did. We felt an immediate connection, and knew that they were the team for us.  Through countless conversations and visits to prospective homes, Carol and Robert always made us feel as if we were their top priority.  They made the process of finding our new home fun and enjoyable, and really set the stage for the new life we would be creating in the mountains of North Carolina. I think what makes them such outstanding partners while looking for a new home is that they really listen.  They could anticipate what we were looking for, and opened our eyes to properties we otherwise would not have looked at.  The home we bought is an example of that.

Though the area has a relatively small number of high technology companies, 736, a business journal ranked it eighth in the country as a high tech center in 2009. The area had 23,096 high-tech jobs with a ratio of 124 per 1,000 total jobs.[171]
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,557 square miles (4,030 km2), of which 1,016 square miles (2,630 km2) is land and 541 square miles (1,400 km2) (34.8%) is water.[5] Most of the water is the Atlantic Ocean, the St. Johns River and the Indian River Lagoon. The county is larger in area than the nation of Samoa and nearly the same size, and population, as Cape Verde.[6] It is one-third the size of the state of Rhode Island.

“We cannot think of anything Leslie could have done better in the sale of my late father’s home. While his home was beautiful and in a fantastic location, it was very dated and we live 400 miles away. Leslie knew the local market, gave us a realistic opinion of the value and put a lot of time and thought into what our priorities needed to be in order to sell the house quickly. She respected our thoughts and concerns throughout the process. The contractors she recommended for the updates did a great job. We have never had a real estate agent keep us as up to date as Leslie did. As closing approached, she went out of her way to assist us in tracking down the necessary documentation and signatures which was a huge help as we work and are so far away from Brevard. The most important things to me were that she was a pleasure to interact with and we came to trust her more and more as time went on.”

Brevard competes with other Florida areas for tourists. A number of organizations help promote the area. The Space Coast Office of Tourism consists of county staff and the Brevard County Tourist Development Council (TDC). They attempt to attract tourists. The TDC serves as an advisory council to the county on the expenditures of revenues received from a tourist tax. This revenue is spent on beach improvements, visitor information centers and website,[188] promotion and advertising, the Brevard Zoo, additional beach improvements and the Space Coast Stadium.

In federal maps printed before 2012, nearly half of Brevard was prone to flooding. Most of this was in the relatively undeveloped low-lying areas, west of Interstate 95, on the banks of the St. Johns River. About 18,900 homes out of 164,000 single-family homes were in that area.[4]
Located halfway between Jacksonville and Miami, Brevard County extends 72 miles (116 km) from north to south, and averages 26.5 miles (42.6 km) wide. Marshes in the western part of this county are the source of the St. Johns River. Emphasizing its position as halfway down Florida is the presence of two roads that are halfway down Florida’s numbering system, State Road 50 and State Road 500.
Although the other boroughs and Long Island have several different MLS[citation needed], MLS has never taken hold in Manhattan. A small group of brokers formed the Manhattan Association of Realtors and operate MLSManhattan.com. MLSManhattan has a small fraction of the total active inventory in Manhattan. The Bronx Manhattan North MLS also offers coverage in Northern Manhattan. It too has failed to acquire widespread adoption by brokers.
In 2010 Kiplinger.com rated the county one of five “best” places in America to retire. Factors evaluated included cost of living, weather, the number of doctors, taxes, crime rates and recreational opportunities.[162]
The prevalent database is operated by the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY), a non-Realtor entity that seceded from the National Association of Realtors in 1994. [36] REBNY operates a database called RLS which stands for REBNY Listing Service. A predecessor of RLS was marketed as R.O.L.E.X (REBNY Online Listing Exchange), before Rolex Watches claimed trademark infringement.
A multiple listing service (MLS, also multiple listing system or multiple listings service) is a suite of services that real estate brokers use to establish contractual offers of compensation (among brokers) and accumulate and disseminate information to enable appraisals. A multiple listing service’s database and software is used by real estate brokers in real estate (or aircraft broker[citation needed] in other industries for example), representing sellers under a listing contract to widely share information about properties with other brokers who may represent potential buyers or wish to work with a seller’s broker in finding a buyer for the property or asset. The listing data stored in a multiple listing service’s database is the proprietary information of the broker who has obtained a listing agreement with a property’s seller.

The MLIS/MLS curriculum can vary widely.[5] Typically both practical and theoretical components are included, often along with a practicum or internship, and students frequently have an opportunity to specialize in one or more aspects of library and information science. Some schools have stringent course requirements, while others are more flexible and offer a wide variety of electives. Coursework may entail traditional library topics, such as reference work, cataloging, collection development, school libraries, or archiving. There may also be a focus on information science and computer science topics, such as database design, as well as information architecture. Other skills taught may include management or pedagogy. Students generally complete a research project or thesis during the last semester of their program.
The Space Coast has a number of museums from the rocket exhibitions at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and the Air Force Space & Missile Museum, to local museums and others of unique character, such as the American Police Hall of Fame & Museum.[citation needed]

In 2007, the real estate brokerage Realtysellers shut down after alleging that the CREA and Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) had modified their rules to hinder flat-fee MLS services on behalf of those selling houses themselves. In 2010, the CREA settled with the Competition Bureau, and agreed to allow flat-fee listings. However, some real estate boards continued to bar the practice, citing interpretations of provincial laws requiring those trading in real estate to be licensed. Flat-free providers disputed the argument, claiming that their services were no different than posting listings on classifieds, and that they were not necessarily trading.[27][28] In 2015, the Competition Bureau began a federal case against the TREB by Realitysellers[29]
In the United Kingdom, MLS – Multiple Listing Systems do exist via some of the agents software providers, but many software providers have only designed their software to work in one company (typically for firms working across a large office footprint). One hurdle to the traditional MLS comes as a result of mixed software packages among agencies that do not allow them to cross share data between other company, so MLS in the United Kingdom is in its infancy and a cross data platform now exists via INEA.

Florida Power & Light maintains an oil-fired generating plant at Sharpes; it generates 800 megawatts (1,100,000 hp), supplying most of the requirements for the county. In 2008 the company announced plans to replace the plant with a more efficient natural gas-powered plant in 2013 with a 1,250 megawatt capacity, which can supply 250,000 homes or businesses.[250] Near FPL’s plant is the Indian River Power Plant; formerly owned by the Orlando Utilities Commission, it is now owned and operated by RRI Energy.

Cocoa Florida

In 2017, there were five municipal entities selling water (figures in parentheses are millions of gallons/day): Cocoa (22), Melbourne (19), Palm Bay (6), Titusville (2), and West Melbourne (1). The fifth, Brevard County (1), is low because county areas outside the preceding cities, purchase their water from those cities.[259]
According to 2007 health risk data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Brevard County (Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville MSA) is tied for fourth highest among all Micro- and Metropolitan Statistical Areas in percentage of heavy drinkers.[235]
Most municipalities are located on at least one waterway. This has resulted in the county and seven cities having a boat or access to one to aid boaters, or to enforce the law in the water in their jurisdiction.[117]

Brevard has five judged art festivals annually attracting tens of thousands of people to art displays. Most festivals are held in the spring or fall when many tourists can attend. Many other annual festivals are held in parks and public sites throughout the year. The Brevard Cultural Alliance (BCA) maintains an event calendar[196] and a map of sites of historic, cultural, and ecological interest.[197]
On the east coast of the state, mangroves have normally dominated the coast from Cocoa Beach southward. Northward these may compete with salt marshes moving in from the north, depending on the annual weather conditions.[69]
Many with MLIS degrees use their professional skills in positions without “librarian” in the job title. The San Jose State University School of Information publishes an annual research report on emerging career trends for information professionals, providing a snapshot of job titles in the field.[12]

Three cities provide potable water and sewage for their cities and surrounding areas: Cocoa, Melbourne, and Titusville. Where available, residents were obligated to hook into the system. In 2012, there were 90,000 septic tanks.[132]
Like MLS, RLS has under contract, sold and days on market data, and houses rental listings as well. There is a database, which in 2011, was slated to be converted to the more familiar RETS standard in January 2012. The RLS gateway is populated by several private databases that include RealtyMX (RMX), Online Residential (OLR) and Realplus, another proprietary database available to Manhattan Brokers. These databases exchange data continually effectively creating several separate systems with essentially similar data. Another vendor, Klickads, Inc D/B/A Brokers NYC, owned by Lala Wang sued in 2007 to be included in the list of firms permitted to participate in the Gateway. REBNY also grandfathered the major brokerages including Douglas Elliman, Corcoran, Stribling, Bellmarc as participants to the Gateway.

The county’s most common winter bird is the lesser scaup, a diving duck. In 2008, half a million were counted. In 2010, 15,000 were estimated.[57] Local bird counts indicate that there are at least 163 species of birds in the county.[58] Other birds include the red-shouldered hawk,[59] the loggerhead shrike,[60] the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker,[61] Cooper’s hawks, pileated woodpeckers, Savannah sparrows,[52] rails (which also includes coots), Florida scrub jays (an endangered species), wood storks, grackles,[44] great horned owls,[62] northern mockingbirds, brown thrashers, catbirds,[63] green-winged teals, greater yellowlegs, western sandpipers, least sandpipers, dowitchers, and American white pelicans.[53] Peak migration in the fall is from the last week in September through the first week in October. Fall migration tends to be stronger than spring because birds typically take different flyways.[64]
The average non-foreclosed house sold for $143,000 in 2010, down from $147,000 in 2009. The average foreclosed house sold for $70,000 down from $81,000 in 2009. 25% of the houses sold in 2010 had been foreclosed. Total foreclosures rose from 2,200 in 2009 to 4,100 in 2010.[159]
The term “MLS” is considered generic in the United States and cannot be trademarked or branded. There is no single authoritative MLS and no universal data format. However, there is a data standard for MLS systems—the Real Estate Transaction Standard—which is being deployed across MLS solutions in North America.[2] Local and private databases use XML-based data feeds to generate and update listings. Listings disseminated through MLS may be controlled by a single association of realtors or groupings of associations which represent all brokers within a given community or area.
